UN announces result of chemical weapons investigation in Syria

UN investigators into Syria’s alleged abuse of power said on Monday that there is no evidence to conclude that any side in the Syria conflict has used chemical weapons. This announcement contradicts the announcement on Sunday of Carla del Ponte, a member of the investigation group, that there exists a “specific suspect” for chemical weapon use by Syria’s opposition forces. The UN investigators said “the council of International Investigation on Syria has not found any specific evidence of chemical weapons use by any party in the Syrian conflict”. The council did not comment on Carla del Ponte’s announcement. The council plans to issue its next report at the end of this month and submit investigation results to the Human Rights council’s June meeting. Meanwhile, a senior US official says the US has not found any evidence of chemical weapons use by Syria’s opposition forces.
