US calls on Russia, China to join new nuclear arms control talks

(VOVWORLD) - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday called on Russia and China to participate in multilateral negotiations on nuclear arms control following the expiration of the New START Treaty.

He said the current global security environment requires a new arms control framework reflecting the reality that the US now faces both Russia and China as peer nuclear powers.
Rubio noted that US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stressed that any 21st-century arms control framework must include both Russia and China.
Washington supports multilateral dialogue on strategic stability based on equality, transparency and effective verification, while maintaining a strong, modern nuclear deterrent and pursuing the long-term goal of reducing global nuclear threats.
