US extends sanctions on North Korea

(VOVWORLD) - US President Joe Biden said Monday he decided to extend US sanctions on North Korea for another year, a move that follows Washington’s latest outreach to Pyongyang for dialogue at any time and place.

In a letter to the speaker of the US House of Representatives, Biden said the North's fissile material as well as its pursuit of nuclear and missile programs continue to constitute a threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States.

The US and South Korea have agreed to consider scrapping a working group established to coordinate North Korea policy, Seoul’s foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

The same day, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un dismissed prospects for an early resumption of diplomacy with the US, saying that US expectations of talks would plunge them into greater disappointment.
