US underestimates rise of Islamic State

(VOVworld) – The US has underestimated the possibility that the Syrian civil war gives jihadists a space to thrive and grow rapidly, US President Barack Obama said Sunday in an interview with CBS News. The self-proclaimed Islamic State was created in Syria out of Al-Qaeda remnants driven from Iraq by US and Iraqi forces. Obama admitted that US intelligence agencies underestimated the threat from Islamic State militants and overestimated the ability of Iraq's army to fight after it received security control from the US. These miscalculations have made Syria and Iraq ground zero for jihadists around the world.

On Sunday, British Prime Minister David Cameron canceled his plan to send ground troops to Iraq. He said ground troops are necessary but should be from the Iraqi army, not from the West.
