At a reception in Hanoi Thursday for visiting Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey, PM Nguyen Tan Dung expressed his hope that the US will boost cooperation with Vietnam in politics and diplomacy, economics, trade, investment, culture, education-training, science-technology, the environment, climate change adaptation, and security and defense.
He voiced his support for increased Vietnam-US defense cooperation, overcoming war aftermath, helping Vietnam join UN peacekeeping missions, and a lifting of its ban on lethal weapons sales to Vietnam.
General Dempsey said his visit demonstrates the US’ commitment to peace and stability in the region, and its desire to be a good partner of Vietnam.
General Dempsey said the US is committed to cooperating with Vietnam in five defense areas and at the same time addressing the war aftermath, considering it a priority.
The US supports Vietnam in joining UN peacekeeping operations, and wants to cooperate in maritime security and help Vietnam meet challenges in defending its maritime sovereignty.
General Dempsey said the US will soon lift its ban on lethal weapons sales to Vietnam.
