Ba Ria-Vung Tau steps up efforts to remove EC yellow card
(VOVWORLD) - The Ba Ria-Vung Tau provincial People's Committee has instructed agencies and local authorities to monitor fishing vessels 24/7, respond to disconnections or boundary violations, and take urgent actions by October to remove the European Commission's (EC) "yellow card" warning.
An interdisciplinary inspection team has been established to strengthen efforts against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing at fishing ports, representative offices, and seafood enterprises.
Nguyen Van Ho, Deputy Director of the Fishing Port Management Board of Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, said that fishermen have become more aware of the need to fight IUU fishing.
While they initially resisted changes due to traditional practices, regular outreach has led to more positive behavior, he said. “Now, they follow the proper fishing areas and routes, with the main goal of lifting the EC yellow card warning.”
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province has formed a team to investigate and address ships that lose connection for six hours or more. The team aims to complete the verification and handling of incidents occurring since October 1, 2023, by October 10.
