Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the UN made the statement at a meeting of the UN General Assembly’s Disarmament and International Security Committee ( First Committee) on Friday at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Ambassador Giang said that disarmament has not yet achieved substantive progress as expected, therefore, the international community needs to step up efforts to promote comprehensive and thorough disarmament, with the highest priority given to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.

He underscored the need to accelerate a balanced implementation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty on all three pillars, including nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, and the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Giang also called on countries to soon sign and ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) to make it soon come into force.

He affirmed Vietnam's commitment to actively contribute to the work of the UN General Assembly First Committee to promote peace, security and development.
