Vietnam cuts emissions by 220 million tones of CO2 equivalent in 30 years

(VOVWORLD) -Vietnam has cut 220 million tons of CO2 equivalent consumption since joining the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer 30 years ago, according to a Hanoi workshop on Monday.

Vietnam, joining hands with the international community, has made tireless efforts over the past years to protect the ozone layer, and control and eliminate ozone-depleting substances and greenhouse gases (HFCs), according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

The country has completely phased out the consumption of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), halon, and carbon tetrachloride (CTC) since January 2010; and HCFC-141b, a substance used in foam production, since January 2015.

According to a roadmap approved by the government, by 2045 Vietnam will reduce emissions by more than 11 million tons of CO2, contributing to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh said Vietnam will go ahead with drastic actions. “Vietnam continues to encourage and support technology conversion, use climate-friendly substances and improve the energy efficiency of cooling equipment. It will boost the collection, recycling, reuse and disposal of controlled substances under the Montreal Protocol. Models will be deployed to replicate applying sustainable cooling technology and provide cooling services in urban areas, residential areas, office buildings, commercial buildings and public works,” he added.
