Vietnam, Sri Lanka seek to enhance bilateral cooperation

(VOVWORLD) - Senior officials of Vietnam and Sri Lanka agreed to strengthen cooperation in economy, trade, and investment, with the aim of reaching 1 billion USD in two-way trade.

During a meeting on Thursday in Colombo, visiting Vice Chairman of the Vietnamese National Assembly Nguyen Duc Hai and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya also agreed to negotiate and sign a free trade agreement soon, to promote a direct air route to facilitate trade and tourism, and to tap into the potential and strength of both countries.

At a meeting the same day, Mr. Hai and Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament Dr. Jagath Wickramaratnem underscored the need for their parliaments to strengthen cooperation and share experience, especially in building institutions and perfecting laws for the development of a digital economy and digital society.

The two sides shared their experience in developing policies to facilitate the development of ethnic minorities in remote and rural areas, and policies for environmental protection and sustainable development.
