Vietnam’s “Glorious Ashes” wins top film prize in France

(VOVWORLD) - The Vietnamese film "Glorious Ashes" by director Bui Thac Chuyen has been awarded the Golden Balloon - the highest prize at the Three Continent Film Festival (Festival des Trois Continents) in Nantes, France.

This is a major film festival for contemporary Asian cinema.

The film won for its shimmering, enchanting beauty, and the lovely and very mischievousness of its three female characters.

The 116-minute film, set in Thom Rom, a poor village on the southernmost coast of Vietnam, tells three deeply psychological stories about love, happiness, and the desire to be loved as a girlfriend, wife, and mother.

"Glorious Ashes" will be screened in Vietnam starting Friday.

Before winning the Golden Balloon Award, "Glorious Ashes" was the first Vietnamese film to compete in the Tokyo Film Festival’s Main Competition category. The film received a sponsorship award in the Asian Project Market program at the 2017 Busan Film Festival in Korea.

It was shot in late 2020 and early 2021 and premiered this year at the 35th Tokyo Film Festival.
