The top Vietnamese leader addressed a ceremony commemorating the 1st anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership and toward the 30th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the US in New York on Sunday (local time).
“30 years ago, perhaps the most optimistic person could not imagine that somehow Vietnam and the United States could overcome the pain of war to build and develop a strong and positive relationship as it is now. We have witnessed unprecedented strong progress, from former foes, we became friends, then Comprehensive Partners in 2013. After 10 years of implementing Comprehensive Partnership, the two countries have achieved major progress in enhancing mutual understanding, building trust and boosting cooperation in all fields," he said
According to top leader To Lam, mutual trust and understanding are the basis for the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and President Joe Biden to decide to upgrade the two countries' relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development last year, on the occasion of President Biden's visit to Vietnam. He called this the pinnacle of the process of healing and developing bilateral relations, as well as the crystallized result of countless efforts to heal and build persistent trust over the past three decades by generations of leaders and friends in the two countries' governments, parliaments and people.
Toward the 30th anniversary of the Vietnam-US relations in 2025, the Vietnamese top leader proposed that the two sides continue to strengthen close coordination to effectively implement the Vietnam-US Joint Statement in 2023. To Lam stressed the need to make science and high technology cooperation such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence, and high-quality human resources training a strategic breakthrough in bilateral relations.
At the event, former US Secretary of State John Kerry underlined that thanks to efforts by generations of both sides’ leaders and people, the two countries today not only are delighted at their success in finding a formula for healing war wounds but also stand a chance to realize what the second US President - John Adams used to say, which is together giving the younger generation opportunities that the current generation could not imagine.
Senator Dan Sullivan said the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, backed by both the Democratic Party and Republican Party of the US, boasts great development potential and will actively contribute to regional and global peace, stability, cooperation, and development.
