(VOVWORLD) - 36 years ago, the first economic-scientific-technical-service complexes, also known as DK1 platforms, were erected on the southern continental shelf of Vietnam. The DK platforms have stood proud like “steel fortresses” over the years, thanks to the soldiers of the DK1 Battalion under the Naval Region 2 Command, who have braved the storm to protect Vietnam’s sea and island sovereignty.

Life is harsh on the DK1 platforms. Freshwater is scarce and food must be delivered by the Navy’s logistic support ships.
Deputy Commander of DK1/9 platform, Lieutenant Nguyen Huy Hoang, said that against all odds, they have accomplished their tasks: "Despite inevitable challenges like rough seas, homesickness, and supply shortages, our officers and soldiers remain unyielding and determined to protect the southern continental shelf of our homeland."
The raised foundations of the DK1 platforms shield the soldiers here from the crashing waves; but it is their optimism, camaraderie, and dedication that carry them through the stormy sky above. A soldier of the DK1 platforms said: "We had already prepared ourselves for all hardships when we decided to go out here. As long as there's people here, these platforms will remain."
"All officers and soldiers always give their all to the mission and uphold the Navy’s traditions and the virtue of “Uncle Ho’s soldiers.” Defending the continental shelf is a great honor," another officer added.

From just three platforms in 1989, Vietnam now has 20 DK1 platforms. But tropical depressions and powerful typhoons pose significant threats to even these solid structures. Waves here can reach up to 13-15 meters high. Storms have destroyed five platforms and claimed the lives of 11 young servicemen.
Though hardships persist, the soldiers and officers stationed at DK 1 platforms stand guard day and night, and work closely with other forces to form a barrier that protect the platforms and their assigned areas.
Political Commissar of the DK1 Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Trung Duc, said: "Our troops on duty at the DK1 platforms are resilient, determined, and remain composed even in the face of constant dangers. We know our mission and are always ready to execute our superiors’ orders at a moment's notice."
And the more hardships they face, the more resilient DK1 soldiers become. Their sacrifices have become a symbol of Vietnam’s maritime sovereignty, said Political Commissar of Naval Region 2 Command, Colonel Tran Manh Chien: "Many generations of DK 1 soldiers have stood firm against all odds with just their self-reliance and grit. They have shown unwavering loyalty and commitments to the Party, the State, and the people. Their motto is “As long as there's people here, the DK 1 platforms will remain.” Our troops have strong political will and are ready for anything."
For 36 years, the DK1 Battalion and the “steel fortresses” they keep guard have become a symbol of patriotism, resilience, unwavering determination, and loyalty to their homeland.
