Quang Ninh strengthens patrol against IUU fishing

(VOVWORLD) -The northern province of Quang Ninh has strengthened patrolling to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (IUU) during the peak time from March to May, as part of efforts to get the EU’s "yellow card" warning for Vietnamese seafood removed.

The province has prepared for the 4th meeting with the EU’s investigation team.

It will rearrange the fleet and types of fishing boats in accordance with the allowable capacity of aquatic resources in each fishing ground and ensure 100% of fishing vessels have registration and fishing licenses based on the National Fisheries Database (VNFishbase), 100% of fishing vessels install and operate vessel monitoring equipment (VMS).

Thieu Van Thanh, Deputy Director of Fisheries Sub-Department, said: “We’ve coordinated with maritime law enforcement forces such as border guard, coast guard, and fisheries surveillance of Region 1 to deploy six rounds of patrol and inspection.

This year the Sub-Department of Fisheries will organize 40 patrols and inspections, inform people of fisheries regulations and IUU in particular, and resolutely handle violations.”

Quang Ninh province is finalizing four storm shelters in Hai Ha, Dam Ha, and Van Don district, and Cam Pha city. Cai Rong port in Van Don district and Co To port are also being upgraded.
