The Hanoi Department of Construction says 90 social housing projects are underway, which will build roughly 80,800 apartments. In June, construction is set to begin on seven social housing projects comprising 6,353 apartments. The projects sites are near public transportation, industrial parks, high-tech zones, and areas with large worker populations.

Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Vu Dai Thang says social housing for rent will rise to 20-30%. “We’ll review all plans, including the city’s new master development plan and existing urban planning schemes, in order to assess land reserves for urban development. Based on that, we’ll allocate quotas of rental housing.”

Previously, Hanoi implemented rental housing models for workers and students, but rental conditions were strict and the scale of development didn’t meet the demand. Now, the beneficiaries of the rental housing policy have been expanded to include workers, students, members of the armed forces, teachers, doctors, journalists, and several other groups.

Director of the Hanoi Department of Planning and Architecture Nguyen Trong Ky Anh said: “More people will benefit from rental social housing. For these projects, we still require full amenities and infrastructure, like schools and childcare facilities and access to public transportation and roads to ensure convenient travel for workers.”

The Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee has asked relevant agencies to implement several key projects before June 15. Work has accelerated on renovation of student housing in the Phap Van–Tu Hiep area to be open for rent as soon as possible.
