Instead of an overseas or other long-distance trip, many people are opting for a shorter trip within their locality, a trip that will take less time and save money.

Several localities report that demand for tour packages is weaker than in previous years. Rising living costs, particularly higher airfares and service prices, are making families think twice about their travel decisions. A nearby destination easily accessible by road has become the preferred option.

Nguyen Thi Vinh of Nghe An said: “Initially, my family had planned to travel abroad this year, but costs have increased and the holidays are short and fragmented. So we decided to switch to domestic travel. Going somewhere nearby is more economical and gives us greater flexibility with our time.”

Like Vinh, many others are choosing short getaways that give them more time to relax. Eco-tourism, community-based tourism, and nature-oriented homestays are attracting more families and groups of young people.

Nguyen An Vu of Hanoi said: “This year, the holiday is split into two periods, so our family made two separate plans. During the Hung Kings’ Commemoration holiday, we’ll stay at a homestay near Hanoi for a change of scenery. For the April 30-May 1 holiday, we plan to travel farther so the kids can have a different experience.”

According to some accommodation providers, bookings for this holiday season are lower than in previous years. Many travelers are waiting until the last minute to make a reservation.

A short, experience-rich trip is becoming the preferred choice for many Vietnamese travelers this year.
