Over the past 10 centuries, the face of Hanoi’s 36 guild streets has changed a lot. But visitors can still find traces of the original guild streets. For example, Hang Bac or Silver Street is still busy trading and making gold and silver jewelry. Last month, the Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee held a Jewelry Craft Festival to honor the Founders of the Hundred Crafts and to celebrate Kim Ngan Temple being recognized as a national relic site. During the festival, a collection of ancient coins and several collections of elaborate jewelry were on display. Visitors learned something about the jewelry craft and saw skilled goldsmiths and silversmiths demonstrating their talent on the street. Phan Tuan Hiep, a member of the Jewelry Association of Hoan Kiem District, says: "Participating in this festival, we think about how to hand down the craft to the younger generation who will preserve and promote it. We think that similar activities should be organized to promote our traditional crafts".
The festival, which was held at Kim Ngan temple at 42 Hang Bac street, featured an exhibition showcasing jewelry masterpieces by the craftsmen of Hang Bac street and Dinh Cong, Chau Khe and Dai Bai craft village. Lacquer products from Ha Thai and Chang Son village on the outskirts of Hanoi were also displayed. Festival goers learned the history of Kim Ngan Temple, which was built during the Le dynasty in the late 15th century. The temple’s impressive architectures inspires many visitors.
Vu Manh Hai, President of the Skilled Artisans’ Association and President of the Hanoi Jewelry Fine Arts Association, says: "Kim Ngan temple is dedicated to the founder of hundreds of traditional crafts in Hanoi. Many artisans and craftsmen have worked here and built this temple to worship the founders of their crafts. The temple has been recognized as a cultural and historical relic. This recognition has encouraged craftsmen and Hanoi people in general to preserve and promote their traditional crafts".
