(VOVWORLD) - The amended Law on Vietnamese Nationality is being discussed at the National Assembly’s ongoing session. The revision aims to create more favorable conditions for overseas Vietnamese and foreign experts and investors to contribute to Vietnam’s development.
The draft amendment focuses on relaxing the conditions for acquiring or re-acquiring Vietnamese nationality. One provision facilitates citizenship applications by foreign investors, scientists, and experts, and anyone whose biological parents or grandparents are Vietnamese citizens.
Lawyer Nguyen Hung Quang, Director of NHQ & Associates Law Firm, said: "This is a highly consistent and timely policy aimed at attracting talent to work for Vietnam. Vietnam has adopted Resolution 57 to promote science, technology, and innovation. If we are to develop a knowledge-based economy and a technology-driven society, it’s essential to create favorable conditions for foreigners, especially overseas Vietnamese, to come work in Vietnam."
The policy to ease the process of regaining Vietnamese nationality is receiving strong support from overseas Vietnamese communities.

Mr. Thieu Van Quang, a Vietnamese living in the Czech Republic, said: "The simplified process for restoring Vietnamese nationality meets the aspirations of many overseas Vietnamese. We earnestly wish to regain our citizenship, as Vietnam is our homeland. If this is not addressed soon, Vietnam risks losing valuable human resources who are eager to contribute to the homeland."
The draft law also has provisions to facilitate foreign investors, scientists, and experts acquire Vietnamese citizenship by offering exemptions from certain regulatory requirements for individuals who make exceptional contributions to Vietnam.
If passed, the 2025 revised Nationality Law will offer new opportunities and incentives for overseas Vietnamese and mobilize high-quality human capital. Longstanding barriers will be removed to pave the way for overseas Vietnamese to actively engage in Vietnam’s political, economic, social, and cultural development.
