Donald Trump set to win Republican nomination

(VOVworld) - Donald Trump will likely win the Republican nomination for the US presidential election after his victory in Indiana, which forced Texas senator Ted Cruz to drop out of the race. Ohio governor John Kasich, Trump’s last rival, has also given up his bid for the White House.

Donald Trump set to win Republican nomination - ảnh 1

In the Indiana primary, Mr. Trump won 53.3% of the votes, Ted Cruz 36.6% and John Kasich 7.6%. Trump now has 1,047 pledged delegates, who will attend the Republican Convention from July 18 to 24. 1,237 votes at the Convention will be needed to become the official Republican nominee for the Presidential election in November.

After the Indiana primary results were announced Cruz said “We gave it everything we got, but the voters chose another path”. Cruz’s dropping out left as Trump’s only rival Ohio governor John Kasich, whose only primary win was in Ohio, where he is governor and who failed to impress in a series of Republican debates. After Trump’s win in Indiana, Kasich’s campaign manager said Kasich would continue his race even after Mr. Cruz dropped out but Kasich soon announced that his heart was no longer in it.

Now no candidate stands between Mr. Trump and the Republican nomination.

The race between Democrats Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders continues with Sanders winning in the Indiana primary with 52.5% to Mrs. Clinton’s 47.5%. Most analysts say this will not be enough to allow Mr. Sanders to catch Mrs. Clinton who now has 2,202 delegates and needs 181 more to clinch the Democratic nomination. A recent opinion poll showed support for Mrs. Clinton 13% percentage points higher than for Mr. Trump.
