(VOVWORLD) - Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc will attend the general debate of the 76th United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday. While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage and create serious challenges globally, President Phuc’s participation in the UN’s general debate once again affirms Vietnam’s role and status as a reliable partner and an active, responsible member of the international community.

President Phuc will deliver a speech at the UN confirming Vietnam’s commitment to resolving global challenges as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure.
Vietnam’s contributions to UN activities
Vietnam marked its 44th year of UN membership on September 20. It will complete its second tenure as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 3 months. The UN general debate is an opportunity for Vietnam to present ideas for resolving shared challenges like global food security, climate security, and response to COVID-19. The UN discussions will center on the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences, recovering the global socio-economy, and staying on track with Sustainable Development Goals until 2030.
President Phuc’s participation in the 76th UN general debate and talks with the UN leaders demonstrate Vietnam’s external policy of independence, self-reliance, and openness with respect to multilateral diplomacy and relations with the UN.
Over the last 44 years, Vietnam has made practical contributions to the UN. Vietnam has been acknowledged by the UN and the international community as a successful model in implementing Millennium Development Goals and a resolute, serious implementer of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change (COP21).
Vietnam supports UN reform initiatives and was one of the first countries to implement the “Delivering as One” initiative to strengthen the UN’s effectiveness at the national level.
Confirming Vietnam’s position in the international arena
Vietnam has made its mark in the international arena. As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 term, Vietnam has handled UN activities with a spirit of independence, self-reliance, responsibility, and neutrality, seeking measures and meeting the needs of the international community, promoting bilateral relations with UN members, and promoting its dual role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and Chairman of ASEAN in 2020. As President of the UNSC in January 2020 and April 2021, Vietnam successfully organized an open debate on the UN Charter and the UN’s first-ever meeting on ASEAN-UN cooperation.
Vietnam has worked with the UN in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. The United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution drafted by Vietnam to declare December 27th the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness.
Vietnam’s contributions to UN agencies have showed its strong commitment to building trust and seeking peaceful resolution of disputes based on the UN Charter, international law, and cooperation between the UN and multilateral mechanisms.
