APEC leaders set the theme: Integration to Grow, Innovate to Prosper

(VOVworld)-Delegates at the 20th APEC meeting discussed food security, innovative growth and the world economy in Vladivostok, Russia on Sunday. Speaking at the session on food security, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for more cooperation within APEC to cope with burgeoning population, child mal-nutrion and impact of climate change and urbanization. Delegates agreed on a multidisciplinary approach to boost investment in agriculture, public private partnership and prevention of illegal fishing for food safety and production transparency.

Addressing the session, Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang called for a closer link between food security and economic restructuring among APEC members, the ASEAN and South – South cooperation. The President suggested APEC members to offer support to restructuring economies towards more equal, democratic and efficient economic and financial management. The President was speaking at the APEC Business Advisory Council:“Vietnam considers Foreign Direct Investment part of its national economy. We aim to create a policy framework on par with other nations of the same level of development and always welcome investors. After 20 years, Vietnam attracted more than 200 billion dollars and FDI has made up one-fourth of Vietnamese GDP  and half of its export revenue.”

Delegates agreed on measure to promote fiscal stability, social welfare and job creation while boosting the implementation of the APEC Growth Strategy initiated last year.

The APEC summit concluded on Sunday with a joint statement on growth, innovation and prosperity. They pledged to promote regional link and appreciated contribution by Russia and the next APEC host, Indonesia in 2013.
