ASEAN as US focus in Asia-Pacific

(VOV) – US President Barack Obama on Saturday will kick off his first trip abroad since his re-election to 3 Asian nations including Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia. National Security Adviser Thomas Donilon said in a press briefing today in Washington that the trip will mark a new step of the next stage of the US re-balancing strategy in the Asia-Pacific region. Obama is scheduled to hold talks with Thai Prime Minister on measures to consolidate comprehensive relations on the occasion of the 180th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties. During his stay in Myanmar, Obama will meet with President Thein Sein and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The US President will then attend the East Asia Summit in Cambodia, the last destination, to discuss regional maritime security, law enforcement, response to natural disasters, and food and energy security. Regarding East Sea disputes, Donilon told reporters: The President's trip will reinforce key principles. That's the need for peaceful resolution of disputes, no prevention of commerce and free navigation, rejection of threats of use of economic pressure to settle disagreements, and particularly the support for ASEAN's effort to adopt the Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct will provide a rule base framework for resolving and preventing disputes.

According to adviser Donilon, Obama’s upcoming visit clearly indicates that the Asia Pacific region remains the President’s top priority in his second term.
