During his cabinet meeting on Thursday, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan hailed the agreement as a significant milestone in strengthening Armenia’s sovereignty and independence. He said it establishes an officially delimited border for the country for the first time since its independence in 1991.

Pashinyan outlined plans to build new roads in the area and deploy border guards along the redrawn frontier within the next 10 days.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a decades-long conflict over control of the Nagorny-Karabakh region. Talks to find a solution to the dispute have been held since 1992, but have not been able to prevent recurring conflict.
