Belarus says its wants to avoid confrontation in migrant standoff

(VOVWORLD) - Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said on Tuesday he will have a second phone call with Germany's outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel in an effort to end a migrant crisis on Belarus's border with the EU.

Lukashenko said he wants to avoid a confrontation over the migrants, that the main thing now is to protect the country and its people, and avoid any clashes.

Poland's defense ministry says the migrants threw stones and tried to destroy a border fence, forcing the army to use water cannons and tear gas against the stone throwers.
