Britain votes to leave EU in historic referendum

(VOVworld) -  Britain has voted to leave the European Union by 51.9 percent to 48.1 percent, final results from all 382 of Britain's local counting centres showed on Friday.

After the vote result, Prime Minister David Cameron announced his plan to step down. Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Mr. David Cameron said it would not be right for him to be the 'captain of the ship' while the UK negotiated its exit from the EU.

After the win for Brexit, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said Scotland still sees its future as part of the European Union. German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel described Britain's vote to leave the European Union as "a bad day for Europe". The President of the European Council Donald Tusk said the EU would show its solidarity after the UK’s decision to leave the EU. French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault on Friday bemoaned Britain's "sad" decision to leave the European Union (EU), saying Europe must win back the trust of its people.

In the Netherlands, Geert Wilders, leader of the anti-EU, anti-Islam Freedom party, has called for his country to follow suit and hold a referendum on EU membership.
