Czech law increases punishment for supporting terrorism

(VOVworld) - The punishment for supporting terrorism in the Czech Republic will be stiffer under an amendment to the criminal code passed by the Senate on Wednesday.

One count will be punishable by three to 12 years in prison. Financing terrorism and promoting terrorism will be separate criminal acts. Other crimes include lone wolf attacks and directly or indirectly supporting a terrorist, a terrorist group, or its members, or the perpetrators of a terrorist act with money or material, or collecting money or material for this purpose. New crimes include threatening a terrorist act and participating in a terrorist group.

The amendment also introduces stricter punishments for robbery, theft, fraud, or blackmail committed in order to facilitate, finance, or enable a terrorist crime.

The legislation will be signed into law by President Milos Zeman and will take effect on February 1, 2017.
