East Asia Summit approves five high-level declarations

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and the Heads of State and Government of the ASEAN, Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Russia and the US have attended the 13th East Asia Summit (EAS) in Singapore.

During the event on Thursday, delegates approved 5 high-level declarations on plastic waste prevention at sea, ASEAN smart cities, telecoms and digital economy, anti-terrorism and nuclear security. Addressing the meeting, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc hailed the EAS role in promoting cooperation, stability and prosperity in East Asia. He called for maintenance of dialogues, trust-building, legal compliance and refraining of unilateral acts to resolve differences peacefully. He said regarding the East Sea issues, the ASEAN always uphold self-constraint while promoting dialogues and trust-building while not using force or threat to use force, settling disputes by peaceful means based on international law.

The Prime Minister then attended the closing ceremony of the 33rd ASEAN Summit, where Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong handed over the 2019 ASEAN chairmanship to the Thai Prime Minister. This was the Vietnamese Prime Minister’s last activity in the summit before returning home.
