(VOVworld) – A workshop on the East Sea took place in Moscow this week. Presentations at the workshop discussed China’s recent illegal activities in the East Sea and showed concern about China’s apparent plan to monopolize the East Sea.

The current situation in the East Sea is worrying and I think it’s time to speak up publicly and frankly rather than keep silent because China’s ongoing military activities pose a threat not only to security in the East Sea but to the world’s common interest.”

The speakers said that disputes need to be addressed through negotiation in line with international law, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea. They recommended that ASEAN early approve a Code of Conduct in the East Sea to create a legal foundation for resolving the dispute. In the framework of the workshop, a number of documents involving Vietnam’s sovereignty over the sea and island and territorial waters were displayed.
