(VOVWORLD) -European countries and Canada are increasing diplomatic pressure on the US following President Donald Trump's strong statements about the possibility of the US acquiring Greenland – a resource-rich Danish island located strategically in the Arctic.
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Sunday spoke by phone with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Greenland's foreign affairs official Vivian Motzfeldt, voicing their unified stance in support of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland.
The Canadian Foreign Ministry stressed Canada’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland amid rising tensions with Washington. Anand is scheduled to travel to Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, in the coming weeks to inaugurate the Canadian Consulate.
In Europe, several NATO member states are stepping up consultations on Greenland. Britain has discussed with France and Germany the possibility of deploying NATO missions to the autonomous island as a safeguard against the risk of US annexation of Greenland. Scenarios under consideration include deploying troops, warships, and aircraft to bolster NATO's presence in the Arctic, reassuring European allies and preventing potential rifts within the alliance.
