France, UK to send troops to Ukraine in event of ceasefire

(VOVWORLD) - French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday signed a declaration of intent to establish a multinational military force to monitor and ensure security in Ukraine once a ceasefire is in place.

This is considered a preparatory step towards maintaining future peace in the region.

The leaders said the force could involve up to 800,000 troops, with support from Ukraine's allies and the US, but the multinational force would not take part in the current conflict. Its mission would be to ensure compliance with any ceasefire agreement and create stable conditions for national reconstruction.

Any troop deployment will take place only after a genuine ceasefire has been achieved and with the consent of all parties involved. This is seen as a step to work out logistics, ready troops, and set codes of conduct preparatory for such time as conditions will allow.
