French Prime Minister Michel Barnier submits resignation letter to President
(VOVWORLD) - On Thursday, French Prime Minister Michel Barnier formally submitted his resignation, along with that of his Cabinet, to President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace, following his government’s failure to survive a no-confidence vote in the National Assembly.

On Wednesday, a coalition of opposition lawmakers led by the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) and the far-right National Rally (RN) secured 331 votes in favor of the motion, surpassing the required 289 votes. This outcome marked a historic political moment, forcing Prime Minister Michel Barnier to resign and his government to collapse.
According to the French Constitution, Michel Barnier must submit his resignation to the President and the resignation will be automatically accepted. Michel Barnier is the first French Prime Minister to be forced to resign by a vote of no confidence since 1962.
