(VOVworld) - The death toll from a massive landslide in Guatemala has risen to 56 people, while about 500 people remain unaccounted for. The local authority said the death toll would increase. About 1,300 rescue workers, soldiers, police, and firefighters are shoveling through the mounds of earth in an area of about 17,600 m2.

President Alejandro Maldonado Aguirre monitored the scene and summoned an emergency meeting to direct rescue activities. Mexico has sent experts on landslide and medical workers to support Guatemala to resolve the aftermath of the worst natural disasters in many years. The prolonged rains have affected some Central American and Caribbean countries.
