Hezbollah-Israel conflict intensifies after new Israeli airstrike in Beirut

(VOVWORLD) - Israel launched on Thursday an airstrike targeting the Health Authority Center in the al-Bachoura area of central Beirut, causing significant damage to nearby houses and parked vehicles.

At least 5 people were killed and 11 wounded, Lebanese health officials said. Shortly before the strike, Israel launched three strong airstrikes on the Haret Hreik area in Beirut's southern suburbs. Israel issued a warning urging residents living near several buildings in Beirut’s southern suburbs to evacuate after announcing plans for more attacks on these facilities. 

Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned the attacks that have caused 1.2 million people — nearly a fifth of the country — to be displaced from their homes and called for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the bloodshed and destruction in Lebanon. 

The Israel Defence Forces said Wednesday that 8 of its soldiers had been killed in combat in southern Lebanon, including 3 officers, its heaviest losses since the start of ground operations against Hezbollah. According to the IDF, more than 240 rockets were fired from southern Lebanon into northern Israel on Wednesday. 

In an interview on Wednesday on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting in Tehran, responding to Israel’s threat of potential attacks on Iranian nuclear sites following Tehran's missile strike on targets in Israel Tuesday night, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Mohammad Eslami, said Iran’s armed forces have established the necessary deterrence.  

Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, the foreign ministries of several countries, including Germany, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Spain, and India, have urged their citizens to leave Iran and Lebanon immediately. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday called for an end to the dangerous escalation in the Middle East. G7 leaders called for de-escalation and stressed the need to resolve the current crisis through diplomatic means.
