(VOVWORLD) -Malaysia has sent a letter of application to join the BRICS intergovernmental organization to Russia, the rotating president of the group, according to Malaysia's Bernama news agency.

In the letter, Malaysia expressed its desire to join BRICS – an organization begun by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa – as a member or strategic partner.
The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Russia has welcomed Malaysia's interest in BRICS and will promote this interest, which was the main topic of discussion between visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and the Malaysian Prime Minister on Sunday.
