(VOVWORLD) - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke by phone with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Sunday to discuss the current situation in the Middle East.
Wang said that China has consistently upheld the principles of the UN Charter and opposed the use of force in international relations.
It’s unacceptable for the United States and Israel to launch strikes on Iran during the Iran-US negotiations, he said, adding that it’s also unacceptable for them to brazenly kill the leader of a sovereign state and foment regime change.
Wang stressed that China's position on the situation in Iran is an immediate cessation of military operations, a prompt return to dialogue and negotiations; and joint opposition to further unilateral actions.
Lavrov said the US-Israel strikes have undermined stability in the Middle East. He noted that Russia shares China’s position and stands ready to strengthen coordination and communication with the Chinese to send a clear signal – through platforms like the UN and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization – calling for an immediate cessation of the conflict and a return to diplomatic solutions.
