Myanmar holds second round of general election

(VOVWORLD) - On Sunday, Myanmar officially entered the second phase of its first general election since the 2021 coup. This is a major political event, conducted in three phases with more than 21,000 polling stations nationwide.

From 6:00 a.m. Sunday, voters cast ballots at polling stations across 12 of the country’s 14 regions and states.

In the first voting phase held on December 28, 2025, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) won a landslide victory, securing 90 of the 102 seats in the lower house, with voter turnout reaching 52.13%. The Naga National Party came in second with four elected candidates, while the National Unity Party (NUP), Rakhine National Party (RNP), and Shan-ni Solidarity Party (SSP) each won one seat.

The final round of voting is scheduled for January 25, to be held in 265 of the country’s 330 townships, with some areas still facing instability.

The election involves 57 political parties, with around 5,000 candidates competing for seats in the Lower House, Upper House, and regional and state legislatures. The new Parliament will elect a President, who will then form a new government.
