According to the latest reports, the quake killed at least 37 people in Nepal and 17 people in India’s northern border, mostly in the Indian state of Bihar. One man was killed and two others were injured by falling rocks in Chinese Tibet. Nepal’s Home Ministry said search and rescue activities are being carried out in the most affected districts.
An American rescue helicopter has been declared missing, a defense official said. The helicopter had two Nepalese soldiers and six US Marines on board. Army Major Dave Eastburn, spokesman for US Pacific Command, said the aircraft disappeared near Charikot, Nepal, while conducting humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations. The Pentagon said the search for the helicopter has been suspended due to darkness. Nepal’s military is searching on foot. The aircraft is part of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469. An investigation is under way.
