(VOVWORLD) - The Russian State Duma on Wednesday approved a five-year extension of the New START nuclear arms control treaty (START-3) with the US.

The treaty’s extension will benefit Russia and ensure global strategic stability, the Russian government said. It reflects Russia’s commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and will contribute to nuclear disarmament.
The extension must be approved by the Russian Federation Council and President Vladimir Putin before taking effect.
