Talks between Iran and IAEA fail

The UN nuclear watchdog and Iran failed at talks on Friday to reach a deal on Iranian disputed nuclear program, a setback dimming any chances for success in higher-level negotiations between Tehran and major powers later this month. Herman Nackaerts, the IAEA's global head of inspections, said after the eight-hour meeting at IAEA headquarters in Vienna that no date for further discussions on the matter had been set. Speaking after the meeting, Iranian Ambassador to the IAEA Ali Asghar Soltanieh affirmed that Iran will prove that all of its nuclear activities are for peaceful purposes only, however, the country needs more time, patience, and favorable conditions, he added.

The meeting puts a shadow over success of the upcoming talks in Russia on June 18th and 19th, between Iran and the P5+1 group which consists of 5 UN Security Council permanent member countries plus Germany. Iran is seeking for a meeting of senior experts in preparations for its talks in Moscow. However, the European Union affirmed that there is no need for such preliminary talks as P5+1 group has always abided by their transparent proposals submitted in their previous meetings.
