The African states said that these two Kenyan leaders need to lead their domestic fight against terrorism threats, especially after the terrorist group Al Shabab attacked the Westgate Trade Center in the Capital Nairobi in September, killing 67 people. However, representatives from countries not in favor of the suspension argued that this can only be done due to reasons affecting international peace and security, which is not applied in this case. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Vice president William Ruto are accused of committing crimes against humanity for their roles in riots after the general election in 2007, killing at least 1100 people.
