US, China agree to push for denuclearization of the Korean peninsula

(VOVworld) – Negotiations between the US and China on the Korean peninsula nuclear issue took place in a constructive and effective manner, said the US State Department on Tuesday after bilateral talks in New York. Chinese special representative for Korean Peninsula affairs Wu Dawei will hold talks with US special representative for North Korea policy Glyn Davies and other senior US officials in Washington this Friday. Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit Japan and the Republic of Korea in a couple of weeks to discuss in greater depth the situation on the Korean peninsula.

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Hua Chunying said both sides should avoid actions that may escalate tensions on the Korean peninsula. She stressed that the situation in Pyongyang is sensitive and Beijing will continue its positive role in approaching the issue.
