The announcement followed Podesta’s meetings in Beijing with Chinese climate officials, including Liu Zhenmin and Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Podesta described the discussions as positive, particularly regarding the upcoming COP 29 climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, this November, and the submission of ambitious 2035 climate targets to the United Nations.

While both sides acknowledged differences in their approaches to climate change, they agreed on the importance of addressing potent greenhouse gases like methane, nitrous oxide (N2O), and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The summit will aim to find common ground on strategies to mitigate these emissions.
