The five-day visit by US Special Representative Sung Kim and his deputy, Jung Pak, takes place amid increased tension between the two Koreas, especially after Pyongyang carried out a series of new-type tactical guided weapons tests over the weekend.
Analysts say it’s possible for North Korea to carry out similar moves, including nuclear tests, on the occasion of the 90th founding anniversary of the Korean People's Revolutionary Army on April 25.
During the trip, Kim will hold talks with his counterpart Noh Kyu-dukk and meet with senior officials from the current Moon Jae-in government and the incoming Yoon Suk-yeol government to coordinate policy on North Korea
