US House passes Republican healthcare bill

(VOVWORLD) - The US House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a GOP-backed health care bill that does not include an extension of expiring tax credits that help millions of Americans pay for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

Consequently, federal assistance for health insurance buyers is almost certain to expire at the end of this year.

The 216-211 vote came hours after Republican leaders faced an opposition within their ranks in support of a Democratic-backed extension of the Obamacare benefit.

The Republican bill aims to reduce insurance premiums for certain groups but at the same time, scales back the total subsidies and increases costs for other groups starting in January 2027.
