At 8:46 a.m. on September 11, 2001, an American Airlines flight en route to Los Angeles was hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists at Boston airport to fly into the northern tower of the World Trade Center. 17 minutes later, a plane of United Airlines crashed into the tower in the south. At 10:28 pm, the twin towers of New York’s iconic World Trade Centre collapsed. 370 km from the site, an American Airlines flight controlled by the hijackers crashed into the US Department of Defense building at 9:37 am. A United Airlines flight crashed into an open field in Pennsylvania at 10:03.

In less than 2 hours, the hijacking of four planes by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists killed nearly 3,000 and injured more than 6,000 others.

This year despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual memorial for the victims of the September 11 attack in the US will be unchanged.

In February, the US reached a historic peace agreement with the Taliban who pledged that Afghanistan will be free from terrorists, al-Qaeda, and the Islamic State. In exchange, the US and its allies will gradually withdraw their troops from Afghanistan, stepping out of the longest war in history they have fought.
