Vietnamese Foreign Minister to attend 46th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting

(VOVworld) - Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh will attend the 46th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM 46), the ASEAN Post Ministerial Conference (PMC), the East Asia Summit (EAS) and the 20th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF20) in Brunei from June 28-July 2.

AMM 46 is the most important event for ASEAN and its partners in their efforts to strengthen cooperation and compare notes on international and regional issues of mutual concern.

There will be a series of meetings during the AMM46, including, the sixth Foreign Ministers Meeting of the Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI) and the US, the third meeting of Friends of the Lower Mekong (FLM), the sixth Mekong- Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the third Mekong-Republic of Korea (RoK) Foreign Ministers Meeting as well as the Mekong and Ganga Cooperation (MGC).

The LMI will review cooperation between the Mekong basin countries and the US in 6 pillars including Environment and Water, Healthcare, Education, Connectivity, Energy security, Agriculture and Food security, to create a model for future cooperation plans. It will discuss the opportunities and challenges for cooperation in connectivity and the environment.

The FLM will take a look at cooperation in the past between the lower Mekong countries and their partners over water management in the region.

The sixth Mekong- Japan Foreign Ministers’ Meeting will outline the implementation of the Mekong-Japan Action Plan for realization of the “Tokyo Strategy” for the 2013-2015 period on 3 cooperation pillars: Enhancing Mekong Connectivity, Developing Together, and Ensuring Human Security and Environmental Sustainability. Participants will also upgrade the action plan.

The third Mekong-RoK Foreign Ministers Meeting will study progress in past cooperation and set targets for future cooperation. The meeting will approve the establishment of a cooperation fund and its terms of references.

The MGC will review cooperation in the areas of culture, education, tourism, and transport, which are their main priorities, and touch upon future cooperation.  

Vietnam’s participation in AMM46 and the related meetings aims to promote solidarity and cooperation within ASEAN and its responsibility in the new context. Vietnam will use this occasion to strengthen its relations with regional countries and important partners such as the US, the RoK, India, Australia, New Zealand, the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank and look for more investment from development partners in its socio-economic projects.
