Vietnamese, US Presidents hold talks

(VOVWORLD) -President Tran Dai Quang and his US counterpart Donald Trump have discussed ways to make the Vietnam-US relationship more practical and effective.

During talks between the two Presidents in Hanoi on Sunday after the official welcoming ceremony, the two leaders said economic-trade ties continue to be the driver of their bilateral comprehensive partnership and contributor to growth and job creation in both countries. Both Presidents agreed to increase exchanges of delegations, particularly high-level delegations, the efficiency of the existing cooperative mechanism, and to consider new cooperative mechanisms. They consented to strengthening cooperation in recovering from war consequences, people-to-people exchanges, science-technology, education-training, and security-defense. President Quang and President Trump said Vietnam and the US have shared interests in maintaining peace, stability, cooperation, and development, while respecting international law in Asia-Pacific and boosting coordination at regional and global forums.

Both leaders stressed the importance of maintaining security, safety, freedom of navigation and overflight, and unhindered trade in East Sea. They consented to settling disputes in the East Sea through peaceful means in line with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.  Both sides said they fully respect diplomatic and legal processes, fully and effectively implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and will promptly sign the Code of Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (COC).

After the talks, the Vietnamese and US presidents had a joint media conference on bilateral ties, witnessed the signing of economic deals worth a total of 12 billion USD.
