Vietnam’s total fertility rate hits record low

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam’s total fertility rate (TFR) hit a historic low at 1.91 in 2024, down from 1.96 in 2023, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO)’s mid-term population and housing survey.

According to the GSO, Vietnam saw a rapid decline in TFR in the past two years, despite having maintained a relatively stable TFR, around the replacement level, for nearly 15 years (2009 to 2022).

Urban areas reported a TFR of 1.67, significantly lower than rural areas at 2.08. Ho Chi Minh City recorded the lowest rate at 1.39, while Ha Giang led with 2.69.

Once the fertility rate declines, recovery becomes challenging, as with many countries such as those in Europe, as well as Japan, South Korea, and China, said the GSO. Immediate policy measures are needed to prevent further decreases, it added.
