This agreement addresses shortcomings revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic. On Wednesday morning, WHO delegates finalized a 32-page document after reaching unanimous agreement on all terms of the accord.

Speaking at WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted the historic significance of the agreement, saying the consensus reflects a shared commitment to strengthening global health security and demonstrates that multilateralism is still alive and effective.

The agreement will be submitted for approval at the upcoming World Health Assembly in May. It is hoped that the accord will provide more effective tools for dealing with future disease outbreaks.
