There is growing concern among Australian authorities about the number of young people being radicalized online.

Burke said: "This feature of young people being radicalized fast online is real. Establishing the center is a necessary and, logical step in a fast-moving threat environment to make sure that our agencies can work together to be able to deal with a threat that is already there, that is continuing to emerge."

Since 2024, Australia has expanded police powers to deal with offenses related to the possession and dissemination of extremist and violent material online.
