In Tokyo, General Giang, visited and worked at the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan, offered incense at the Ho Chi Minh Memorial Hall, and met with embassy staff and representatives of the Vietnamese community in Japan. Ambassador Pham Quang Hieu, representing the Vietnamese community, reported to the General on Japan situation, the community's situation, Vietnam-Japan relations, and future plans.
“Regarding Vietnam-Japan relations, I would like to emphasize three points. Firstly, political, defense, and security relations continue to be a bright spot. Secondly, economic cooperation has become the most important pillar in the relationship between the two countries; Japan continues to be Vietnam's leading economic and trade partner. Thirdly, both sides have identified science and technology as a new pillar in bilateral relations since May 2025, when former Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru visited Vietnam,” Mr. Hieu said.
Deputy PM Giang expressed his hope that the representative agencies and the Vietnamese community will continue to contribute to their homeland and their host country. “I request that the Embassy continue to effectively promote the role of diplomatic representative agencies abroad, pay more attention, support, and encourage the Vietnamese community. I know that our workers in Japan face many difficulties. We will continue to address it. I will meet with the Minister of Defense and the Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan and discuss the issue,” he added.
Japanese Minister of Defense Koizumi Shinjiro told the press that General Giang's visit marks the first visit to Japan by a Vietnamese Minister of Defense in 5 years, and he personally went to the airport to welcome the General. Japan believes that the visit will contribute to deepening bilateral friendship and cooperation, he said.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, General Phan Van Giang, on Monday will visit the Japan Self-Defense Forces Staff College, pay a courtesy call on Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara Minoru, and conduct official activities at the Japanese Ministry of Defense.
